Madinah to Makkah Taxi: My Honest Experience Making This Trip

I was sitting in my hotel room in Madinah, packed bags by the door, and genuinely didn’t want to leave. Four days there had gone by so fast, and now I had to figure out getting back to Makkah for the final stretch of my trip before flying home.

Funny enough, this direction of the journey felt completely different from the Makkah to Madinah leg I’d done a week earlier. Same road, same distance, but a totally different mindset — part of you is sad to leave the Prophet’s ﷺ city, and part of you is thinking ahead to farewell tawaf and packing for the flight home.

The Route Itself

Madinah to Makkah is about 450 km, and the drive takes roughly 4 to 4.5 hours under normal conditions. The highway is well maintained for almost the entire stretch, and honestly, going this direction felt smoother than the trip out, mostly because I wasn’t stressing about arrival logistics the way I had been the first time.

Add prayer breaks, a food stop, and possibly re-entering ihram at the Miqat if this is your first Umrah on this trip, and you’re realistically looking at 5.5 to 6 hours total from hotel to hotel.

One thing that genuinely surprised me: traffic near the Makkah entry points was noticeably heavier on this direction than it had been leaving Makkah the first time. My driver mentioned it’s usually busier heading into Makkah in the afternoons because of the volume of pilgrims arriving for weekend Umrah trips. Worth keeping in mind if you have flexibility on departure time.

Don’t Forget the Miqat If You’re Entering Ihram

Compared to my Jeddah airport experience where I ended up haggling at 1 AM, this felt like a completely different level of stress-free. Fixed price, no surprises, driver already familiar with the Bir Ali stop without me having to over-explain.

Asking Your Hotel Concierge

A lot of hotels in Madinah, especially the ones closer to Masjid an-Nabawi, have relationships with local drivers and can arrange this for you directly. I didn’t use this option myself, but I met a couple from Indonesia in the hotel lobby who booked this way and said it worked out fine, though slightly pricier than booking independently through WhatsApp.

Shared Group Transport

If you’re traveling as part of an Umrah package tour, this leg is often already included as a group departure. Convenient, but you’re on the group’s schedule, not your own, which matters if you had specific plans for your last hours in Madinah, like a final visit to Masjid Quba or the Qiblatain mosque before heading out.

What This Trip Costs

Pricing is going to vary depending on the vehicle size, season, and how far in advance you book, so I won’t throw out a fixed number that might be outdated by the time you read this. As a rough guide from my own trip and conversations with other pilgrims:

• A private sedan for 3-4 people tends to be the most economical private option
• Larger vans work out cheaper per person for families or groups of 5 or more
• Expect higher prices and less availability during Ramadan and Hajj season — book early if your trip falls in these windows

5. Confirm your Makkah hotel address clearly, including any nearby landmarks, since some hotel names near the Haram are easy to mix up.
6. Keep snacks and water in the car. The drive is long, and rest stop food isn’t always what you feel like eating after an emotional departure from Madinah.
7. Charge your phone fully before departure — you’ll want it for prayers, directions, and just staying in touch with your group along the way.

A Real Moment That Stuck With Me

About halfway through the drive, my driver pulled over at a rest stop that had a small prayer area outside, basically just mats laid out under a shaded structure. We prayed Asr there together with a handful of other travelers who’d also stopped, most of them strangers to each other, all heading the same direction.

It wasn’t anything fancy, but there was something genuinely moving about that shared moment on the highway, everyone quietly praying side by side before getting back in their cars and continuing toward Makkah. Little things like that are part of why I’d never rush this drive just to save an hour.

Mistakes to Avoid

Not communicating your Miqat needs clearly. As I mentioned, this caused real confusion for me. Be specific with your driver from the start.

Assuming this direction is identical to the trip out. Traffic patterns, timing, and even your own headspace are different heading back to Makkah, especially if farewell tawaf and packing for departure are on your mind.

Waiting too long to book during peak season. Vehicles get scarce fast during Ramadan and Hajj periods, and prices climb the closer you get to your travel date.

Skipping the pre-trip bathroom and shower routine. If you’re preparing for ihram at the hotel before leaving, don’t rush this. A calm, unhurried prep beats a stressful scramble at Bir Ali.

Not confirming your exact drop-off point in Makkah. Some hotels near Abraj Al-Bait have restricted vehicle access zones, so ask your driver in advance if you’ll need to walk part of the way with your bags.

Leaving Madinah is honestly bittersweet, and that emotional weight kind of colors the whole drive back to Makkah in a way I didn’t expect the first time I did it. It’s not just a transfer between two cities — it’s the part of the trip where everything starts winding toward the end, and that hits differently than the excitement of the journey out.

Plan your ihram stop properly, book ahead if you can, and don’t rush through this leg just to get it over with. Some of the quieter, in-between moments of this whole journey end up being the ones you remember most clearly once you’re back home.
